Building a UK credit history from scratch

Why a credit history matters for renting, phones and loans, how new arrivals start building one, and how to check your credit file for free and avoid scams.

When you arrive in the UK, your credit history from Nepal does not come with you - in the eyes of UK lenders you are starting from zero. A credit history is simply a record of how reliably you handle money and bills. Building one early makes life much easier, and the good news is it costs nothing to start.

Why credit history matters

Lots of everyday things check your credit record, not just loans:

  • Renting - many landlords and letting agents run credit checks.
  • Mobile phone contracts - a monthly contract is a form of credit.
  • Utilities, car finance, loans and mortgages - better records often mean better deals.

A thin or empty file isn’t bad behaviour - it just means there is little for companies to go on, so some may say no or charge more at first.

How new arrivals start

  • Register on the electoral roll if you are eligible. Some Commonwealth and other nationals living in the UK can register to vote in certain elections, and being on the roll helps lenders confirm your name and address. Check your eligibility before registering.
  • Open a UK bank account and use it normally - receiving your salary and paying bills from it builds a track record. (See our guide on opening a bank account.)
  • Pay every bill on time. Rent, phone, utilities and any credit - consistent on-time payments are the single biggest thing that helps.
  • Stay at one address where you can, and keep your details consistent across accounts.

Credit-builder options

There are products designed specifically to help people build a record, such as credit-builder credit cards or accounts where small regular payments are reported to credit reference agencies. Used carefully - small amounts, always paid off in full and on time - they can build your history. Used badly, they can damage it, so only borrow what you can comfortably repay and never miss a payment.

Check your credit file - for free

You can see what is on your credit file through the main UK credit reference agencies, and there are free ways to check. Reviewing it lets you confirm your details are correct, spot mistakes, and watch your record improve over time. Checking your own report does not harm your score.

Avoid “credit repair” scams

  • No one can legitimately remove accurate information from your file, however much they charge.
  • Be wary of anyone promising to “fix” or “boost” your score for an upfront fee.
  • You can correct genuine errors yourself, for free, by contacting the credit reference agency.
  • Never share bank logins or one-time passcodes with anyone offering to improve your credit.

Building credit takes time and consistency - there are no shortcuts. Focus on paying on time and keeping your details accurate, and your record will grow.
