Exchanging your Nepali driving licence in the UK

Can you swap your Nepali licence for a UK one? The short answer is no - here is what to do instead.

✓ Last verified: 2026-06-14  Why does this matter?

If you drive, one of the first questions after moving to the UK is whether you can swap your Nepali licence for a British one. This guide explains the rules and what to do.

Can you exchange a Nepali licence?

The DVLA only lets you directly exchange a licence from certain “designated” countries. Nepal is not currently on that list, which means you cannot simply swap your Nepali licence for a UK one. Instead, you will need to apply for a provisional licence and pass the UK driving tests. Always confirm the current country list on gov.uk/exchange-foreign-driving-licence, as designations can change.

Driving on your Nepali licence at first

As a visitor or new resident you can usually drive in Great Britain on a valid full Nepali licence for up to 12 months from when you become resident. After that, you must have a UK licence to keep driving. (Check current rules, as time limits and categories can vary.)

Getting a UK licence: the steps

  1. Apply for a UK provisional licence (you must be a GB resident and meet the minimum age and eyesight rules).
  2. Pass the theory test (multiple-choice plus hazard perception).
  3. Pass the practical driving test.
  4. You then receive your full UK driving licence.

Tips

  • Your Nepali driving experience still counts - lessons may be quicker, but UK road rules, roundabouts and the theory test catch people out, so prepare properly.
  • Book the theory test early; practical test waiting times can be long in some areas.

Confirm everything, including the 12-month period and the exchange country list, on gov.uk/exchange-foreign-driving-licence.
