How to set up your UKVI online account (eVisa)

Step-by-step guide to creating your UK Visas and Immigration online account and accessing your eVisa.

The UK has replaced physical Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) with a digital proof of immigration status called an eVisa. If you hold a UK visa, you now prove your status online instead of carrying a card. This guide explains how to set up the UKVI account that holds your eVisa.

What is an eVisa?

An eVisa is an online record of your immigration status. Moving from a BRP to an eVisa is free and is not a new visa application - you simply create a UKVI account that links to your existing permission to stay. Once set up, you log in to view your status and generate a share code for others.

Before you start

  • Your current BRP (even if expired) or your passport.
  • The email address and phone number you want to use for the account.
  • A smartphone to verify your identity with the UK Immigration: ID Check app.

How to set it up

  1. Go to the official page at gov.uk/evisa and start creating a UKVI account.
  2. Enter your identity document details and verify your identity using the ID Check app.
  3. Confirm your contact details. You will get confirmation once your account is linked to your eVisa.

Proving your status (share codes)

To show your status to an employer, landlord or university, log in to the “View and prove your immigration status” service, generate a share code, and give it to them with your date of birth. Share codes are time-limited, so generate a fresh one when needed.

Common issues

  • Travelling soon? Make sure your eVisa is set up and linked before you fly, and keep your passport details in the account up to date.
  • Changed passport? Update your travel document in your UKVI account, or your eVisa may not link correctly at the border.
  • Can’t access the account? Use the UKVI account recovery options on GOV.UK rather than starting again.

Rules and the exact sign-up steps can change. Always confirm the current process on the official page: gov.uk/evisa.
