How to renew your Nepali passport in the UK

Your Nepali passport is the document your UK immigration status is attached to, so letting it run down causes problems well beyond travel - visa applications, right-to-work checks and bank onboarding all depend on it. Renewal is handled by the Embassy of Nepal, not by any UK office, and it is worth starting early.

Where to go

The Embassy of Nepal in London is at 12A Kensington Palace Gardens, London W8 4QU. Its published office hours are Monday to Friday, 09:00–13:00 and 14:00–17:00. Always confirm current hours, fees and document requirements on the embassy website at uk.nepalembassy.gov.np before travelling - requirements change and London is an expensive trip to make twice.

Mobile consular camps

The embassy periodically runs mobile consular camps outside London - past locations have included Swindon, Preston, Scotland and Ireland - where passport and other consular work is done locally for a few days. If you live far from London, these camps can save a great deal of time and money. Dates are announced on the embassy website and circulated through community associations and Nepali samaj groups, so it is worth following both.

What else the embassy handles

Beyond passports, the embassy provides a range of consular services that Nepalis in the UK commonly need:

• Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) - often required for visa, settlement and some employment applications.
• Citizenship matters, including renunciation of Nepali citizenship.
• Vital registration - registering a birth or a death that occurred abroad.
• Non-Resident Nepali (NRN) identity card.
• Power of attorney - commonly used to let a relative in Nepal deal with property or bank matters on your behalf.
• Document attestation for Nepali certificates to be used in the UK, and vice versa.
• Travel documents where a passport has been lost or has expired.

Plan around the timing

Passport production is not instant, and your passport is normally held during processing. That matters if you have a visa application, a trip home, or a right-to-work check coming up. A few practical points:

• Start well before your passport’s expiry - many countries and airlines expect at least six months of validity remaining.
• Do not book non-refundable travel until your new passport is physically in your hand.

Watch out for

Agents who offer to “fast-track” embassy paperwork for a large fee are rarely offering anything you cannot do yourself. The embassy publishes its own fees and forms; check those first. If someone asks you to hand over your passport outside an official embassy process, treat that as a warning sign.
